Notes RE: Inaugural Meeting

Kevin's picture

I wanted to first off thank everyone for taking the time out of their weekend to join us this past Saturday. I was extremely pleased with the turnout and feel that it is a good indicator of how successful we will be in the future.

Jason and Chris did a fantastic job with their thoughts on Flex and Apollo, as well as what they saw at Flash forward-Austin. Very slick stuff. Look for their presentation info posted within this forum folder. Thanks again guys.

It was obvious after all the introductions were made that there are 2 groups represented within our community - web design and graphics (esp: photography). Co-Chair Gene McCullugh and myself are going to do everything in our power to make sure that we try and strike an even balance in terms of the content we cover during our meetings. As a matter of fact, Gene will be doing a mini-presentation on Adobe Bridge and how well it works with photographs. We are currently looking for a graphics-based speaker for our January meeting.

Our next meeting will be at NerdBooks - Richardson again on Sat, Nov 11 from 11-1 and our guest speaker will be Andy Rutledge of Net Success here in Dallas. Andy will be discussing the importance of Web Standards in web design today. It was also asked at the meeting if Andy could speak on RSS and CSS as well, in relation to the topic of Web Standards. For more info on Andy's background check out the following link:

Other items:

From time to time we are given the opportunity by several publishers to review books and then add them to our library. Since we don't have an office of any kind to speak of (nor will we ever want one) - whoever writes a review for the AUG will get to keep the book for their services. Both John and Chris have expressed an interest in reviewing. Reviewers will be rotated to give everyone an opportunity.

We have discussed the possibility of posting resumes within our forum (I'll create a separate folder for this). This way we can help out fellow members looking for work and also see where all our relative skillsets lie and who we could perhaps go to for assistance.

We have several members who are associated with local training facilities within the metroplex. These groups both have ability to provide certification training for various Adobe software items (ex: Flash, Dreamweaver). It would be nice if members could organize amongst themselves and help each other study for certification. If someone would like to particpate in this, let me know and I'll create a folder within the forum.

I would like us to be able to have our own mini-LMS available exclusively for members within our group. This would not onlly increase membership but would also showcase some of our members talents. Work is already underway in creating this environment. That is all I can say at this time.

Corporate sponsors are needed to help pay for miscellaneous expenses such as refreshements at our meetings and advertisments within papers like the Dallas Morning News/Fort Worth Star Telegram. We would be willing to post a link to the corporate sponsor on our website in gratitude for their assistance. Avalon Consulting, LLC of McKinney will be sponsoring our Nov 11 meeting.

Doorprizes will be hopefully available in advance of our next meeting Nov 11, per Adobe.

Everyone seemed to like the NerdBooks location, so for the time being it looks like that will be where we will host our meetings for the longterm.

Thats all I have for now. Thanks again for all your support - and I look forward to seeing you all again on Nov 11 -

Sincerely,
Kevin

Well, Kevin seems to have covered it all! I am encouraged by such a great start for DFWAUG. I hope you all bring a friend to the next meeting and we'll instantly double our size!!

I plan on a short workflow walkthrough from camera through Bridge to Photoshop. Bring your Bridge questions. If you haven't yet used Bridge take a look before the meeting. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised!

See you in November!
