Here's a tip for some would-be HD shooters wondering why get a 1080i or 1080p camera - two shots for the price of one. I always edit 720p, because that's what most local TV stations are putting out right now. But, if you shoot 1080, you really get two shots in one.
Just capture your footage, bring it into a 720p timeline, and start cutting. If you need some shot variance, just right click a clip and deselect 'scale to frame size', and magically you go to a tighter shot.
This way, you can cut back in and out of the action.
Another thing I use it for is compensating for different camera talent. For my less experienced shooters, I just tell them to zoom back half a hair from where they think they should be, and then use scale and motion controls in post to frame it up the way it should have been until they get more comfortable with the controls.
The cool thing is showing them it in post and using it as a coaching tool until they're up to speed. That way, I get the shot that I need, without having to stand over their shoulder and train in front of the client.
I'm surprised not many folks have picked up on this, but it's worked like a charm on my end, even with my camera only shooting 1080i (I just remember to deinterlace the footage).
Hope that helps, and keep editing!
